Definition of Class

This position develops productive relationships with academic scientists, business executives and legal counsel to support technology transfer, commercialization, and entrepreneurial activities on campus. The incumbent manages inventions and innovations created by university researchers, while coordinating access to related resources. The incumbent evaluates commercial potential of technologies, identifies potential licensees, and prepares technical information for marketing purposes.

 

This position is anticipated to be eligible for a hybrid remote work arrangement. The incumbent will be expected to work from the office a minimum of 2 days per week and could be more frequently as needed for meetings. However, the employee must be able to commute to campus on short notice if unplanned projects arise. Transportation and housing will be the responsibility of the employee.

Examples of Work Performed

  • Fosters university technologies and/or intellectual property by developing productive working relationships with academic and corporate scientists, business executives, and legal counsel.
  • Seeks appropriate industry contacts and engages with potential partners.
  • Prepares and manages intellectual property related agreements including but not limited to, confidential disclosure agreements, inter-institutional agreements, option agreements and license agreements.
  • Prepares technical information for marketing purposes that communicates complex scientific information in a concise and professional manner.
  • Performs market analysis to assess commercial potential/marketability, technical understanding, and value of intellectual property.
  • Coordinates with the MS Small Business Development Center, The UM Transactional Law Clinic, and third-party companies to promote business development efforts and new venture opportunities for employee startups.
  • Assists with customer discovery, prospect development, pipeline management, pitch decks and pitch competitions.
  • Manages, solicits & evaluates research disclosures to ensure that they have been accurately completed by investigators.
  • Determines if disclosures meet U.S. patent law qualifications and if federal funding and/or other sponsored research funding (including state, nonprofit and industry) has been involved in the development of an invention.
  • Collaborates with Communications to maintain an active social media presence, including networking and educational events.
  • Assists with execution of initiatives to inform and educate faculty, staff, and students about technology transfers.
  • Ensures compliance with university policies and procedures, participates in office planning, and supervises efficient operations.
  • Assists in monitoring licenses, including tracking diligence and/or milestone requirements for the university’s commercial and development partners.
  • Provides guidance and support to graduate students that support technology transfer, commercialization and entrepreneurial activities on campus.
  • May be required to travel to various off-campus locations including business and industry sites.
  • Performs similar or related duties as assigned or required.

Essential Functions

  1. Develops and maintains productive relationships with stakeholders to support technology transfer, commercialization, and entrepreneurial activities.
  2. Assists with the development of marketing strategies for university inventions.
  3. Develops intellectual property strategies for university disclosures.

Minimum Education/Experience

Education:
Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited college or university in a biological science, physical science or engineering.


AND


Experience:
Two (2) years of experience related to the above described duties.

Must meet the requirements for Export Control Regulations, including but not limited to US citizenship or legal residency.

 

Substitution Statement:

Related experience may be substituted for education, on a basis set forth and approved by the Department of Human Resources.

Salary/Wage Information

Annual Salary Range: $59,761 - $84,729
