Utility Engineer (Electrical)

Definition of Class

This position provides electrical engineering services and coordinates the operation, maintenance, renovation, and expansion of University electrical systems. The incumbent supervises and coordinates activities related to the operation of electrical utility services and develops plans and specifications as necessary for electrical renovation and construction projects, reviews electrical plans and specifications for new construction and renovation projects designed by outside consultants, prepares reports, forecasts and analyses on assigned projects, usage of power, and conservation of energy, and ensures electrical power installations conform to applicable federal, state, and local regulations and codes. This position reports to an Assistant or Associate Director within the Department of Facilitates Management.

Examples of Work Performed
  • Supervises and coordinates activities related to the operation of electrical utility services.
  • Provides estimates and develops plans and specifications as necessary for electrical renovation and construction projects.
  • Reviews electrical plans and specifications for new construction and renovation projects designed by outside consultants.
  • Prepares reports, forecasts, and analyses on assigned projects.
  • Ensures electrical power installations conform to applicable federal, state, and local regulations and codes.
  • Operates and maintains electrical utility systems; to include primary power substations and distribution systems, campus clock and bell system, street lighting, and other outdoor lighting systems.
  • Operates and maintains building and facility electrical systems including lighting, power distribution, fire alarm, and emergency power.
  • Schedules and coordinates a comprehensive program of preventive maintenance for electrical systems.
  • Responds to emergency calls and assists as necessary in making repairs to electrical systems.
  • Provides oversight of third-party contractors working on campus powerline or electric shop projects.
  • Ensures all safety and job skill training is scheduled and conducted and verifies all licensing and certifications are up to date.
  • Coordinates and schedules major renovation and new construction project reviews and walk throughs with Facilities Planning.
  • Shares knowledge and experience with powerline and electric shop teams for seamless continuity of service.
  • Performs similar or related duties as assigned or required.
Essential Functions

Minimum Education/Experience

Education:
Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited four-year college or university in Electrical Engineering.

 

AND


Experience:
One (1) year of experience related to the above described duties.
