Position Description


This position assists in the day-to-day data collection operations of the in vivo and in vitro screening assays for the COBRE Phase III, Neuropharmacology Core. This position requires IACUC training and certification and vivarium conduct to maintain AAALAC accreditation, as well as radioactive material handling certification. Laboratory procedures are primarily rodent-based drug screening assays, receptor binding assays, and neuroprotection assays. Fish-based screening assays are also employed.


Job Responsibilities
Execution of in vivo assays which conditioned place preference, hot plate, Hargreaves, von Frey, forced swim test, elevated plus, open field, rotarod, Barnes maze, etc. Responsibilities also include drug administration, tissue harvest, data entry and analysis, and experimental preparations. Execution of in vitro screening includes carrying out cannabinoid and opioid receptor binding and functional assays, as well as treating and analyzing neuron viability. Responsibilities also include cell culture, radioactive material handling, and thorough record keeping.  


Minimum Education/Experience
R&D Biologist: B.A. or B.S. degree in related field (neuroscience, psychology, biology, biochemistry, etc.) with a minimum of 2 years’ experience is required by the time of the appointment.


Associate R&D Biologist: B.A. or B.S. degree in related field (neuroscience, psychology, biology, biochemistry, etc.) is required by the time of the appointment.
