Definition of Class
This position identifies, cultivates, and solicits gifts, focusing on major gift prospects. The development associate will see that donors receive proper recognition and stewardship. The position is assigned a school or program and must be knowledgeable of and articulate about the related giving opportunities. Extensive travel is required to cultivate and solicit donors. This development associate is assigned to the Division of Diversity and Community Engagement and must be knowledgeable of and articulate about the related giving opportunities. The officer must foster relationships with appropriate donors, private foundations, industry partners, and related funding opportunities.
Examples of Work Performed
- Arranges visits with prospective donors, foundations, and industry partners via phone, email, and social media.
- Articulates the vision, mission, and goals of Pathways to Equity (the UM DEI strategic plan) and UM schools and unit Equity in Action plans.
- Attends alumni, donor, college, sporting, DEI, economic development, and other related events.
- Drafts proposals for donors, industry partners, and philanthropies to support UM DEI efforts and programs.
- Promptly records interactions with donors in the development database.
- Supports and collaborates with fellow UM development professionals and school/unit leaders to attract funding for DEI programs.
- Works in partnership with annual giving for online crowdfunding campaigns and the annual UM Giving Day.
- Staffs and prepares the vice chancellor for diversity and community engagement and other relevant DCE division staff for visits with donors.
- Stewards donors to create lasting support for UM DEI efforts.
- Sends biographical and organizational updates to prospect research.
- Runs reports to build a trip or share information with a supervisor.
- Travels overnight and on weekends to meet with prospective donors and attend relevant convenings as necessary.
- Ensures all assigned tasks are in compliance with University, SEC Conference, and NCAA rules.
- Performs similar or related duties as assigned or required.
Essential Functions

- Cultivates and solicits gifts from assigned donors.
- Identifies possible donors.
- Travels extensively and represents assigned program at various university functions.
Minimum Education/Experience
Education:
Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited four-year college or university.
Experience:
One (1) year of experience related to the above described duties.
Substitution Statement:
Related experience may be substituted for education, on a basis set forth and approved by the Department of Human Resources.
