Position Description
The School of Engineering at the University of Mississippi is seeking an experienced researcher, administrator and faculty member for the position of Director of the Mississippi Mineral Resources Institute (MMRI) and tenured/tenure-track faculty in the appropriate department. The faculty appointment will be at a rank commensurate with qualifications and experience.
Mississippi Mineral Resources Institute
The Mississippi Mineral Resources Institute was established in 1972 by the Board of Trustees of the State Institutions of Higher Learning in an effort to coordinate mineral-related research in Mississippi. The mission of MMRI remains to provide both the public and private sectors with expertise needed to make responsible decisions regarding Mississippi's and the nation's natural resources and environmental well-being.
The goals of the MMRI are to:
• promote mineral resource and related environmental research and education within the state and around the world,
• provide academic background and practical expertise to interested agencies of industry, academia, and government,
• promote the transfer of technology between academia, industry, and government, and
• ensure that future scientists and engineers receive appropriate training by providing educational opportunities, work experience, and financial support in academic fields complementary to the goals of the Institute.
The MMRI seeks to meet these goals by pursuing research projects that address contemporary issues, providing educational and practical training to college students who work on these projects, providing our project results to interested parties in industry, government and academia, and by engaging in community service activities. The institute is supported by a combination of state funds and external grants and contracts.
School of Engineering
The School of Engineering at the University of Mississippi was established in 1900, making it the oldest engineering school in Mississippi. Over the decades, the school has grown to ten undergraduate programs, both master’s and doctoral degrees, a diverse faculty and student body, and alumni excelling in public and private fields. The school has an undergraduate enrollment of approximately 1,100 students and a graduate enrollment of 150. There are around 70 faculty members in seven departments.

Minimum Qualifications
Candidates must have:
• doctoral degree in Geology, Geological Engineering, Civil Engineering, Environmental Engineering or a closely related field;
• research experience in the areas of geology, geological engineering, geospatial sciences, hydrology, petroleum geology, environmental science, or water resources;
• strong commitment to teaching excellence in the areas of geology, geological engineering, geospatial sciences, hydrology or, petroleum geology at the undergraduate and graduate levels;
• a history of securing extramural funding from different sponsors;
• proficiency managing multiple, large, complex research projects;
• demonstrated ability mentoring graduate students to success;
• a record of collaboration with a wide range of constituents (faculty, staff, students; industry and government officials; and private, state, and federal sponsors);
• experience in supervising, mentoring, and empowering staff; and
• a clear vision for advancing the institute.
