Definition of Class

This position oversees sports nutrition education and counseling services for athletics. The incumbent assists in the planning, development, and implementation of the sports nutrition program; provides nutrition assessment, counseling, and education for student athletes and coaches; develops and manages the sports nutrition budget; and ensures services are intended to support the physical, emotional, and social health of student-athletes.

Examples of Work Performed

  • Directs and implements student athlete nutrition programs including weight management, performance nutrition, hydration protocols, individual and team nutrition assessment, disordered eating, and supplement use.
  • Serves as a liaison between UM Nutrition & Hospitality Department and Athletics to recruit, mentor, and supervise sports nutrition graduate assistants.
  • Provides individualized nutrition counseling services.
  • Conducts initial student-athlete nutrition assessments and screenings.
  • Counsels and advises student athletes on optimal nutrition for training, weight management, hydration, disordered eating, travel, and supplement use.
  • Communicates and collaborates with members of the athletic medical team about student athletes referred for nutrition counseling.
  • Develops and oversees nutritional policies and procedures.
  • Creates and implements dietary programs to assist in the management and treatment of nutrition-related medical conditions.
  • Conducts body composition analyses as needed.
  • Organizes and facilitates team presentations on sport-specific nutrition topics including grocery store tours, cooking classes, team talks, etc.
  • Educates and interacts with coaches and athletic medical staff on nutritional issues and specific nutrition concerns that may arise.
  • Assists with team(s) pre, during, post practice/game fueling as well as plans nutritional menus for team travel.
  • Develops and manages assigned sports nutrition budget.
  • Researches, evaluates, and recommends appropriate nutritional supplements with regard to NCAA rules and regulations.
  • Educates and advises coaches and athletic medical staff on NCAA bylaws pertaining to nutrition supplements.
  • Oversees the management of nutritionally high-risk student-athletes.
  • Ensures all assigned tasks are in compliance with department, University, Southeastern Conference, and NCAA rules and regulations.
  • Performs similar or related duties as assigned or required.

Essential Functions

These essential functions include, but are not limited to, the following. Additional essential functions may be identified and included by the hiring department.

  1. Directs sports nutrition education services for student athletes.
  2. Provides nutrition assessment and counseling for student athletes and coaches.
  3. Develops and manages assigned budget.
  4. Provides supervision and guidance for sports nutrition staff.

Minimum Education/Experience

Education:
Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited four-year college or university in Dietetics or a related field.

AND

Experience:
Three (3) years of experience related to the above described duties.

Licensure:
Incumbent must be a Registered Dietitian or license eligible within (12) months of employment.

Substitution Statement: Related experience may be substituted for education, on a basis set forth and approved by the Department of Human Resources.
