Definition of Class

The Walker Lab and Werfel Lab in the Department of Biomedical Engineering are jointly seeking applicants for a full-time Postdoctoral Research Associate position. The successful candidate will join an exciting new project focused on creating a microfabricated implantable drug delivery device for treating depression. Clinical translation is a high priority and candidates with an interest in entrepreneurship are particularly encouraged to apply as this project offers an excellent opportunity for commercialization. Energetic, committed, and driven mentors will provide a supportive and productive environment for the candidate. In addition to accomplishing the goals of the project, the candidate will be encouraged to develop and pursue independent research directions and will be given multiple opportunities to practice their grantsmanship. The initial appointment lasts one year with a second year of support possible pending satisfactory progress and available funding.

 

 

Expectations

  • Microfabricate drug delivery devices and characterize their performance
  • Develop new device designs and fabrication procedures as needed and informed by experimental results
  • Generate, compile, and interpret experimental data resulting from in vitro and in vivo studies
  • Assist with daily lab operations and with mentoring junior lab members
  • Develop oral and written communications skills, contribute to grant reports and new grants, patent applications, manuscripts, and conference presentations

Minimum Education/Experience

The ideal candidate will have a Ph.D. in Biomedical Engineering or a closely related field and experience with the microfabrication techniques of hot embossing and/or micromolding and photolithography. Computational modeling (COMSOL) experience is desired but not required. The candidate should also have familiarity with drug delivery principles (e.g., drug loading, controlled release, pharmacokinetics, and drug targeting) and cell culture techniques.
