Job Description

The University of Mississippi's National Center for Physical Acoustics (NCPA) is seeking a Research Associate to conduct research of mutual interest to NCPA and the Agricultural Research Service (ARS). The candidate will engage in research involving development and adaptation of GIS data in support of watershed modeling.  The research will include dataset development including imagery and elevation models, ad hoc and application-based GIS analyses, and creating maps and related outputs in support of agricultural research.  

Specific tasks include: compiling soils, climate, landuse, and terrain data available in the public domain; compiling satellite imagery; purchasing and acquisition of data and imagery; and creation of new datasets through geographic analyses and the georeferencing.  The candidate should have significant expertise with the ESRI suite of software and hydrology management databases such as WISKI.  Excellent writing and graphic development skills for creating maps, graphics and related documentation for use in publications and presentations are essential.  Research duties will be conducted in close collaboration with the Watershed Physical Processes Research Unit, National Sedimentation Laboratory, Oxford, MS.

Job Responsibilities (examples of work performed and essential functions): 
The research associate will supervise GIS functions at NCPA, including GIS analyses, data management, and creation of maps and graphics for research publications. Additionally, the research associate will work with hydrology management databases, LiDAR data sets, and agricultural economic and statistical data.

Minimum Qualifications (education and experience): 
This position requires a Master’s degree in Geophysics or related field with five years of relevant experience.
