MCSR supports computational researchers at public universities across the state of Mississippi. We are a small team within the University of Mississippi IT department, which means you get the fun of working on a small team and the support of a larger team.

Role Summary

Provides systems administration support for multi-user, multi-application enterprise compute servers.

 

This position is the primary system administrator on multiple computational clusters running Linux. They also assist computational researchers in efficiently running their HPC jobs using PBS and SLURM.

Examples of Work Performed

  • Provides advanced technical support to HPC users and assists researchers in using the capabilities of MCSR to the best advantage.

  • Establishes new user accounts on HPC platforms.

  • Diagnoses and trouble shoots user connection problems.

  • Compiles, tests and optimizes the performance of serial and parallel applications, including applications with extensive library dependencies, on HPC platforms.

  • Maintains web-based documentation of MCSR systems and software applications.

  • Designs, maintains and supports software systems for mass data storage and retrieval.

  • Identifies research projects and that can benefit from MCSR participation.

  • Builds multi-institutional, interdisciplinary consortia of researchers to explore collaborative opportunities and writes competitive grant proposals.

  • Develops and conducts both live and web-based user training workshops on HPC topics.

  • Participates in short and long-term planning, devises outreach strategies, develops and implements policies to optimize research productivity.

  • Participates in cooperative scientific research and oversees student research efforts.

  • Performs related or similar duties as required or assigned.

Essential Functions

These essential functions include, but are not limited to, the following.  Additional essential functions may be identified and included by the hiring department.

1. Provides multiple levels of support for ensuring proper functioning of the operating system software and its associated components for the University’s academic, administrative, and research based enterprise compute servers.
2. Installs, maintains, and updates the enterprise backup software. 
3. Develops scripts, programs, and tools to assist with system administration functions.
4. Works with application and Help Desk support personnel to resolve system issues. 

Minimum Education/Experience

Education: Bachelor's Degree

Experience: (3) Three Years Experience
