Definition of Class
The University of Mississippi’s National Center for Physical Acoustics (NCPA) invites applications for a Research Scientist to assume a leadership role as a Principal Investigator within the High-Speed Aeroacoustics Research Group (HSAG) to grow and broaden the aeroacoustics research activities.
HSAG has an established track record in the study of dynamic interactions in high-speed flows including fluid-acoustics, fluid-structure, and combustion related problems. Our facilities offer a unique opportunity to leverage multiple measurement techniques simultaneously to explore and refine the understanding of turbulence interactions in complex flows. HSAG is seeking a candidate that will secure new contracts/grants/partnerships that leverage HSAG’s world class research facilities to conduct novel research that will expand the group’s expertise in areas such as jet noise, fluid/structure interactions, unsteady combustion dynamics, and/or supersonic multi-phase flows. Other research areas that leverage existing infrastructure will be entertained.
HSAG is a small group of researchers working in tight collaboration on experimental research activities. The group includes scientist, research staff, graduate students, and undergraduate interns. The work environment is interactive, fast-paced, and engaging. Current research activities are funded by NASA, Army, Navy, and Air Force. Additional information is available at http://www.olemiss.edu/depts/aeroacoustics/.
The NCPA is an externally funded research unit of the University. While not a tenure-track position, the research positions in the NCPA do follow a promotion path that is closely aligned with the University’s academic ranks (Associate Scientist, Scientist I, Scientist II, Senior Scientist I, Senior Scientist II, Principal Scientist). Currently, one to two years of funding is secure for the new position through HSAG’s current research. For promotion, the candidate will be expected to develop and sustain outside funding for research efforts commensurate with their expertise. The candidate will also have an opportunity to mentor students in the University’s Graduate Program in Aeroacoustics.
Job Responsibilities (examples of work performed and essential functions):
The candidate shall assume a leadership role as a Principal Investigator within the High-Speed Aeroacoustics Research Group (HSAG) and team with the other researchers to grow and broaden the aeroacoustics research activities at The University of Mississippi. The candidate shall demonstrate excellence in academic research. The candidate shall utilize modern testing techniques to measure and characterize complex flow fields and aeroacoustics related phenomena. The candidate shall interact with external customers and partners to increase research productivity and advance research goals. The candidate shall participate in recognized professional societies commensurate with their expertise. The candidate shall seek to advance HSAG’s mission through development of infrastructure, intellectual property, external partnerships, and academic collaborations within the University’s best interests. For promotion, the candidate will be expected to develop and sustain outside funding for research efforts commensurate with their expertise and mentor graduate students on related research projects.
