Role Summary

Evaluates and conducts medically prescribed speech-language pathology treatment programs in applicable care setting (hospital, ambulatory, inpatient rehabilitation unit, skilled nursing, home health, psychiatric care facility, senior care program). Clinically supervises aides, assistants , students and or clinical fellowship year staff.

 

This primary responsibility of this position is to provide clinical supervision and instruction to graduate students in Communication Sciences and Disorders; provide direct, billable client services by assessing the speech and language skills of clients and implementing intervention strategies and treatment programs; and instruct one undergraduate course per semester; and Serve department, school, and university committees. The incumbent has the authority to exercise discretion over a wide variety of areas.

Examples of Work Performed

  • Provides supervision and clinical instruction for graduate students to ensure quality preparation for students and service for clients.
  • Determines clinical direction and provides feedback and constructive feedback about students’ clinical performance.
  • Establishes appropriate assessment and intervention approaches for adult speech-language clients with neurogenic, voice, cognitive communication and feeding/swallowing disorders and other areas in the SLP scope of practice as needed.
  • Develops clinical agenda/specialty clinics related to speech-language pathology.
  • Provides direct, billable client services and required documentation/reports.
  • Instructs one undergraduate course per semester in Communication Sciences & Disorders;
  • Provides feedback, guidance, and/or assignments to ensure students demonstrate competency in the required knowledge and skills to become an independent practitioner.
  • Meets with students and is available during scheduled student appointments.
  • Explains clinical policies to students, as approved by faculty and clinical instructors.
  • Maintains compliance with all required clinical policies and procedures, accreditation and certification standards, and Mississippi State Department of Health regulations.
  • Attends faculty/staff and committee meetings.
  • Serves on departmental, school, and university committees.
  • Performs similar or related duties as assigned or required.

Essential Functions

These essential functions include, but are not limited to, the following.  Additional essential functions may be identified and included by the hiring department.

1. Diagnosing, treating, and preventing speech, language, and swallowing disorders.
2. Creating treatment and therapy plans to suit the individualized needs of a diverse population of patients.
3. Performing screenings to detect voice or speech disorders.
4. Educating patients and family members about speech disorders and causes, including disabilities and traumatic events.
5. Keeping detailed records relating to patient conditions, care plans, therapies, and progress.
6. Reporting progress and current status to appropriate parties, which may include family members, teachers, or medical professionals.

Minimum Education/Experience

Education:
Master's degree in Speech Language Pathology from an accredited four-year college or university
AND
Experience:
Three (3) years of experience as a SLP clinical educator/supervisor.
AND
Certification:
Mississippi State Board of Health SLP Licensure and SLP Certificate of Clinical Competence
