Department Summary

This position is responsible for installing, terminating, and testing telecommunication wiring. Working under the close supervision of a Telecommunications Technician, the incumbent receives verbal work assignments and detailed instructions for all but routine or repetitive tasks. Work is monitored to ensure compliance with established guidelines and overall adequacy. While complex tasks require direct oversight, the incumbent may independently complete simpler assignments with minimal supervision.

Role Summary

Assists in the operational items related to the university's telecommunications physical layer infrastructure. Responsible for installing, terminating, and testing telecommunication wiring for data, voice, and video communications. Duties include installing jacks, patch panels, and 66 blocks. Operating common hand tools to complete installations. 

Examples of Work Performed

• Installs, terminates, and tests telecommunication wiring for data, voice, and video communications.
• Installs coax cable wire, jacks, patch panels, and 66 blocks.
• Reads and follows schematic and block diagrams to complete installations.
• Uses common hand tools to perform tasks.
• Required to lift and carry approximately 50 pounds.
• Requires close vision and the ability to distinguish colors for wiring and installation.
• Receives specific and detailed instructions for all tasks except routine and repetitive ones.
• Work is reviewed in progress to ensure compliance with instructions and overall adequacy.
• May perform simpler tasks independently or with minimal supervision.
• Performs related or similar duties as required or assigned. 

Essential Functions

These essential functions include, but are not limited to, the following.  Additional essential functions may be identified and included by the hiring department.

1. Assists with technical and operational technology support related to installation of cabling and associated equipment.
2. Assists with the integration of new communication technology product offerings or modifications.
