Definition of Class

This position designs, installs, and supports telecommunications infrastructure for the University of Mississippi. The incumbent configures, maintains, and supports communications platforms; analyzes, identifies, and resolves complex telecommunications problems; evaluates and identifies capacity and performance issues; and manages servers to ensure optimal performance.

Examples of Work Performed

  • Installs and supports telecommunications infrastructure and its associated software.
  • Maintains and supports university voice mail systems.
  • Configures and modifies VDN’s, Vector’s, cover paths, automatic route selection tables, EC500, and announcements.
  • Plans, analyzes, designs, and develops the university’s telephone system including analog, digital, VoIP, and SIP technologies.
  • Coordinates the installation of telephones and equipment to cables and lines supplied by outside vendors.
  • Makes recommendations concerning efficiency, effectiveness, and planning of departmental telephone systems.
  • Configures and supports unified communications platforms.
  • Manages telecom servers and voicemails to ensure timely updates are accomplished and appropriate security measures are in place.
  • Configures, tests, maintains, monitors, and troubleshoots end user telecommunications hardware, telephony devices and endpoints, and voice/fax/data hardware products.
  • Inspects, tests, and maintains telephone lines, circuits, trunks, and associated wiring and cabling.
  • Collaborates with other telecom engineers, telecom support analysts, and network analysts when problems arise.
  • Troubleshoots all associated systems and upgrades or reconfigures as needed.
  • Provides coverage for after hour emergencies.
  • Analyzes, diagnoses, and implements solutions for complex telecommunications problems.
  • Monitors and identifies capacity and performance issues for telecommunications traffic to ensure continued, uninterrupted operation of telecommunications systems.
  • Provides guidance and direction for support staff.
  • Develops and supports phone system processes and procedures.
  • Assists in maintaining current inventories and supporting documentation of telephone equipment owned or leased by the university.
  • Verifies and documents software or hardware failure, repairs, installations, removals, and other work requests.
  • Performs similar or related duties as assigned or required.

Minimum Education/Experience

Education:
Associate’s Degree from an accredited college or university.

 

AND

 

Experience:
Two (2) years of experience related to the above described duties.

Salary/Wage Information

The starting salary for this position is $68,681.
